And it does toast the center. I had a previous incarnation of this several years ago, but it was destroyed through no fault of the toaster's. That worked pretty well for about 2 years but then the heat elements in the center began going out. Anyway, after browsing through reviews, I ordered a new Kitchen Aid from Amazon and am pretty happy with it. Solution; bought a pair of toaster tongs for $1.99 at BB&B. I picked up something else at Target but returned it because the center on that one didn't toast either.
It's working pretty well. I looked around town to find a new one but was unable to locate one and so ended up with a Procter Silex. English Muffins are particularly difficult due to the uneven surface so I first toast them on a medium setting and then add an additional 60 seconds on the "Bagel" setting. How difficult is it to have all of the elements burning in a toaster. It's not like it has many functions to perform - Heat, raise and lower. One complaint, when done, the bread doesn't elevate high enough so you can burn the heck out of your fingers trying to get it out.
The red toaster is very attractive and doesn't take up much counter space.
This product performed poorly. Bagel and warming functions did not work. English muffins required toasting twice on darkest setting. Very uneven toasting overall. I subsequently bought Cuisinart CPT-160. Far superior in every way.
KitchenAid KTT340WH 2-Slice Toaster with Bagel and Warm Functions:I recently bought the KitchenAid Toaster and was impressed by it's initial quality. It toasts evenly and use it to defrost (warm) and toast waffles. It is an exceptional value.
This is a wonderful lightweight multi-function toaster with space for bagels (and a special BAGEL setting). I liked it so much I recently got another one for my mom.
I'm going to try the Krups FEM2B next. We suspect that American toasters now have less wattage for either environmental or safety concerns.
I'm getting ready to send it to the Goodwill and purchase a fourth. I like my toast fast, brown and not all dried out.
This is the third toaster I have purchased in the last 12 months. He checked his older, less expensive and better-performing Kenmore, two-slice toaster and discovered it to be 1050W.
This toaster takes at least 3 minutes and two tries on the darkest setting to get the toast brown and by that time, the toast is as dry as dust. My father suggested I check the wattage on the toaster - it is 850W.
Whatever the reason, the toaster is unsatisfactory for making toast although as others have noted, it does a pretty good job on bagels. It's the only 1050W two-slice toaster listed on Amazon (many of the toasters do not state the watts).
